Chile’s recent earthquake measured 8.8 on the Richter scale and no wonder – the NY Times reckons it caused a 400 mile gash between the plates! It must have been massive if it shook the earth for 1 1/2 minutes – remember our Dudley earthquake only lasted 30 seconds and was 5.5. Must have been hell for the locals but doesn’t seem to have killed as many as in Haiti – at least not yet.
